Create A Custom Patio Cover For Your Tiny House Out Of Aluminum

by Ryan Wright

If you want to create a patio on the back of your tiny home, you need to be sure that you have a patio cover installed to ensure that you can get shade when you need it. When you own a tiny house, you need for everything to be as light as it can be, while still being durable. Use the guide below to learn how to use an aluminum patio cover on the outside of your tiny home to create the outdoor relaxation area you want quickly and easily.

Determine How Large You Want the Shade to Be

The first thing you need to do is to decide how large you want the cover to be. You want to be sure that it will at least large enough to cover the patio to provide shade and block rain during inclement weather. It is best to measure your patio and then get a cover that is roughly half a foot longer than the patio so that water can be diverted away from where you are sitting when it rains.

Installing the Cover

Next, you need to decide how you want to install the cover on the home. If you plan to move your tiny home on a regular basis, consider installing the cover to the exterior of the house with hinges so that you can fold it down flat against the wall when you are traveling. This will keep it from buckling during travel. Simply attach a set of strong hinges to the edge of the cover that you want to be flush against the home. Next, attach the hinges at the height you want the cover to be located when it is up.

Create Support Bars for the Shade

Finally, you need to create support bars for the shade so that it can stay raised when your home is parked. Copper piping can serve as great support bars for this type of project because they are often very durable and have an industrial look to them. To use the bars, determine the angle you need them to be positioned at in order to support the cover at the exact height you want it to be at. Make a mark on the wall of the home at that height and install flagpole bases at both points. Position the poles into the bases and then make a mark on the cover where the top of each pipe hits. Install another set of flagpole bases onto the cover. The pipes should slip seamlessly into each set of base and be secure during rain, snow, or even sleet.

When it is time to travel, all you will need to do is remove the poles that keep the cover up and then lower the cover. You can then use a ratchet strap or eyelet hooks to secure the cover so that it doesn't slam against the side of the house as you travel.
